This kind of skin cleansing is typical of the Middle East. This small fishes are Garra rufa, a kind of carp, used in thermal pools to keep the water clean. The lady in the photo is Khun Kung, the maintenance manager of the company in charge of our house, and we hope she will not fill up our pool with these small fishes.

Questa nuova forma di pulizia della pelle si avvale dell’aiuto di tanti piccoli pesci che mangiucchiano i lembi di cute morta. Sono della razza Garra rufa, piccole carpe e sono tipiche del Medio Oriente, soprattutto Turchia, Siria, Iraq, Iran, e India. Sono utilizzati nelle piscine termali di acqua dolce e nei bacini di acque calde naturali per pulire l’acqua. Questa che vedete nella foto è Khun Kung, la manager della compagnia che gestisce la maintenance della nostra casa, e non vorremmo che ci riempisse la piscina di pesciolini. In effetti il trattamento le è piaciuto anche se, come si può notare, si vergognava un po’.

We came to visit Evaluna old college to find out if she can come here next year as a student assistant in the Summer Sport Camp. Wow I love this place: 36 acres of green educational college! Clever. I wish to be teenager again. And I promise you I would be a better student.

The food courts are everywhere in shopping centre or arcade. It’s a cheap and fast way to eat. You just buy a card (you decide what amount to put in) and go around the small stands with different varieties of cuisines and food. You pay with your card and at the end they give you back the amount not used. We don’t have this in Italy.

Le food court sono in tutti I grandi centri commerciali. È un modo veloce e a buon mercato per mangiare. E non è niente male. Si va alla cassa e si compra una card con l’ammontare di Baht desiderato. Poi si va in giro dai diversi venditori, ognuno specializzato in qualche delicatessen locale, e si paga con la suddetta carta. Alla fine si recupera quello che non si è speso. Facile ed economico. Da noi in Italia non ho mai visto niente di simile.

Ceramics in Thailand are great stuff, like the Celadon ones. Also the less known Ceramics of Phuket are doing excellent objects. They started in 1990 and invented the "Phuket Clay" a unique style and prime quality. The native clay preserves nature appearances by its durable material, intrinsic texture and classic natural tones. Even the shop is worthwhile a visit, on the way to Heroines Monument just outside Cherngtalay.

Le ceramiche in Thailandia sono sicuramente di ottima qualità, basta pensare alle celadon del nord. Anche le meno famose Ceramics of Phuket sono di ottima fattura e interessanti per la particolare argilla locale. Il negozio, sulla strada per l’Heroines Monument, poco fuori Cherngtalay merita sicuramente una visita. Gli oggetti sono belli e particolari e il setting è molto suggestivo.

Chao Fah Variety (opposite Wat Nakha, Phuket City) is also known as the new weekend market. This is now Phuket's largest market, having taken over from the now defunct Chatuchak. There is a wide range of items on sale, including clothes, accessories, pets, home decorations and plenty of delicious food. You can also find computers programs and music.

If you like music and cars loud, the weekly car stereo enthusiasts meeting at Sapan Hin is the perfect place for you. Every Saturday night from 9:00 on some 70 bedecked cars and trucks are rolling up each week. The event is organized by a local car stereo fitting company: Sapam Sound which held the world record for the loudest car stereo, measured at 174.3 dB., recently beaten by a team from America who had a system costing seven million baht, which pumped out a whopping 179.5 dB. The best music gang is the Never Die, the group of our friend Khun Wat. It’s unbelievable the music they pump. And the prices: the costumers can pay up to Bt 600,000 (about US$ 17,600) for a car sound system.

Wow, viene da dire ‘Tu vuo’ fa’ l’Americano’. Un gruppo di 70 e oltre auto (in maggior parte pick up) che si ritrovano ogni sabato sera a Sapan Hin dalle 21:00 in poi a scatenare la potenza di centinaia di watt in musiche pompanti energia pura. Il tutto è organizzato dalla Sapam Sound, un’officina dello stereo auto che ha detenuto il record mondiale di suono (se così si può chiamare) con una potenza di 174.3 dB. (battuto recentemente da un team americano che ha raggiunto i 179.5 dB. La miglior delle gang musicali di Phuket è i Never Die del nostro amico Khun Wat. Pompano musica a tutta manetta e hanno impianti che arrivano fino a 600.000 Bt (17,600 US$).

I think the correct English world is sweet tooth. So if you like to try something really Thai (specially at the North) and delicious this is it: the sticky rice. It’s prepared in a bamboo pole and it’s sweetened by nature (is a peculiar type of glutinous rice, Oryza Glutinosa but doesn’t contain gluten). Paung din - both purple and white varieties - is cooked in bamboo tubes.

Un consiglio per i golosi come il sottoscritto. Lo sticky rice, il cosiddetto riso appiccicoso (Oryza Glutinosa che però non contiene glutine) viene cotto - nella versione bianca o viola - in canne di bambù. È un piatto tipico del Sud Est asiatico conosciuto come paung din.

Sunset is magic everywhere but here at Surin is great. The place, a little hut with chairs has no name (like the dog) but is known as Sunset Bar. You reach it at the far north end of the beach and for only 70 Baht you can enjoy a Singha, some reggae music and the sun! A special sunset in honor of my daughter Francesca birtdhday.

Cosa di meglio da fare alle 18:30 se non appostarsi in attesa del tramonto. Qui a Surin, questo piccolo bar al lato nord, è uno dei nostri posti preferiti. Per soli 70 Baht si può gustare una Singha, della musica reggae e il sole. Il posto non ha nome ma è conosciuto come Sunset Bar. Un tramonto speciale in onore del compleanno di mia figlia Francesca.

This here is Nai Harn, probably the most beautiful beach in the island. It’s far South and has only one hotel on it, the Meridien. It’s a cozy bay protected even in summer during the monsoon. You can easily recognize it in a photo because of the wind energy mill at the northern tip. It’s really beautiful! Still beautiful even if there are more tourists than before. The central area is dominated by an important temple nearby an internal lagoon that flows with a small river on the beach. This has been our first choice to find a house.

Questa che vedete è Nai Harn, probabilmente la più belle spiaggia di Phuket. È all’estremo sud dell’isola e ha un solo albergo che vi ci si affaccia, il Meridien. È racchiusa e protetta anche d’estate col monsone. La potete riconoscere dalla pala eolica che spicca al lato nord. Bella, bella, bella. Anche se cominciano ad esserci più turisti di prima. C’è un bellissimo tempio che ne occupa la parte centrale e un laghetto interno che vi sfocia. Ai tempi è stata la nostra prima opzione per cercare una casa.

If I have to tell you the real reason why I am happy to come back every time to Kata is this young lady. She makes the best rotis ( pancakes for English) of the island. Any filling or just plain starting at 20 Baht (banana ones 35 B. are exceptionally good).

Se vi devo dire la verità, io torno volentieri a Kata per una sola ragione: questa giovane ragazza. Lei fa, senza ombra di dubbio, i migliori roti (o pankake che dir si voglia) dell’isola. Tutti i gusti sono buoni a partire dal semplice zuccherato per soli 20 Baht (ripieni di banana sono eccezionali: 35 Baht).

This time we are heading South: the most popular and touristic side of Phuket. The first stop is in Kata Beach. Not bad and not too crowded: it’s summer season now and mostly only Italians and Russians are on holiday. We were staying here in Kata, in a small hotel, the first time we took EL in Phuket. That’s why we like to come back and see. It’s becoming huge: new hotels and shops, and everything. Fun for kids (maybe one of these days I will show EL after her nightlife in Kata: at the moment I prefer to keep the pic to blackmail her!!!).

Questa volta andiamo verso Sud, nella parte più popolare e turistica dell’isola. Kata beach è tuttora piacevole e non troppo affollata in stagione estiva: più che altro ci sono italiani o russi in vacanza. Torniamo volentieri qui perché ci ricorda la prima volta che abbiamo portato EL a Phuket. Allora eravamo in picoolo albergo e c’era poco d’altro, adesso anche qui si sta espandendo: hotel, negozi, ristoranti. Un posto divertente per i ragazzi (e magari un giorno di questi vi faccio vedere la foto di EL al ritorno da una serata brava di night life. Al momento preferisco tenerla come arma di ricatto).

The Splash Jungle is the first and best waterpark in Phuket. It’s brand new and very well equipped with a wave pool, the Superbowl , the Boomerango and several body slides. This is a great family place for having fun with children; parents can have a massage or a sauna while kids play. The only thing is that’s not so cheap: 1.495 Baht per adult and 750 for kids. It’s near White Sands Resort on Mai Khao beach.

Ha aperto a gennaio e con i suoi scivoli, piscina con le onde, Superbowl e Boomerango è una delle principali attrattive per le famiglie in vacanza nell’isola. Intanto che i bambini si divertono i genitori possono approfittare della sauna o farsi fare un massaggio. On our Northern island discovery tour we stop over at Mai Khao beach, a huge strip of white sand bordered by Sirinath National Park and few hotels. JW Mariott is the most famous of them. If you want to walk alone on a beach this is a great place.

Nel nostro tour alla scoperta del nord dell’isola ci fermiamo sempre volentieri a Mai Khao beach, una lunghissima striscia di sabbia bianca al limitare del parco Nazionale di Sirinath. La vera attrattiva del posto è il JW Marriott, un fantastico 5 stelle con Spa al seguito. La spiaggia è il luogo ideale per passeggiate solitarie.

Grazia favorite fair is, with no doubt, the Flower Fair held at Saphan Hin in Phuket Town. Hundreds of sellers with a lot of orchid’s varieties, bougainvilleas, jasmines, frangipani and more. Also the food is good (except for the live shows on stage, really terrible!) and, if you want you can also buy Japanese Koi, the maculated lucky fish, at only 35.000 Bahts (!!!).

La fiera preferita di Grazia è senz’altro questa, il Flower Market che si tiene ogni anno a Saphan Hin a Phuket Town. Centinaia di venditori espongono incredibili orchidee a prezzi inusitati (dai 50 centesimi di Euro in su), frangipani, palme e ogni genere di verde vegetale. È un vero spettacolo condito da buon cibo e musica (gli show sono un po’ scarsini, ma si può soprassedere). Per gli amanti dei pesci, poi, c’è una vera chicca, il Koi, la carpa maculata giapponese porta benessere, che viene venduta a soli 35.000 Baht (quasi 1.000 Euro!!!).

The Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World every year does a ‘release day’ to give freedom to thousands of butterflies in the wild. This time was held at the Ton Sai waterfalls in Thalang district, near home. A lot of schoolboys and youngsters were there. We opened the white cages and a huge amount of butterflies flew in the clear sky. After that we planted some hundreds of plants to feed the new larvae. A great experience.

Il Phuket Butterfly Garden & Insect World organizza ogni anno una giornata di liberazione delle farfalle. Migliaia e migliaia vengono rilasciate in libertà da scolaresche e sostenitori di questa organizzazione. Quest’anno l’evento è stato organizzato alle cascate di Ton Sai, vicino a casa, e così abbiamo felicemente partecipato all’happening.

Tchachatchai Nature Trail is a nice walk of 625 meters on a wodden path inside the mangrove area in northern part of the Island. The best time to go is when the tide is high and the big fishes come inside this incredible ecosystem for food. There are a lot of songbirds and spiders. The entrance is just before the Sarasin Bridge, 2/3 km after the check point.

Tchachatchai Nature Trail è un percorso su passerella di legno nella foresta di mangrovie. Sono solo 625 metri ma vale la pena, specialmente durante l’alta marea quando i grossi pesci entrano in questo ecosistema alla ricerca di cibo. È pieno di songbirds e ragni. L’ingresso è poco prima del Sarasin Bridge, 2/3 km dopo il check point.

Every time we arrive we do need some ‘physical restoration’. We usually begin with nails, than feet and, only for me, the barber shop. My choice is the Smile Bar Ber (the sign is a mix of a Pub - a Bar Beer - or a Barber shop) which I choose because of the sign. My Phuket cut is with the blade N. 1. With 80 Baht I have a cut and a head massage. Gorgeous.

Non è un pub alternativo tipo Beer Bar con una E in meno. È proprio un negozio di barbiere scritto alla Thai. È il mio preferito vicino a casa e fa parte dell’operazione di restauro che effettuiamo ogni volta che arriviamo qua, con manicure e pedicure. Con soli 80 Baht faccio taglio (lama 1 alla Marines) e massaggio alla testa.

We were worried about Maffo, our toad (the newsletter’s members know about it), he wasn’t home. I found him in a small papyrus pot in the garage and the girls (without my permission) move him to his old pot (see the picture). Now he is missing!

Eravamo molto preoccupati per il rospo Maffo (i frequentatori della nostra Newsletter conoscono la sua storia) che fosse sparito? Invece l’ho ritrovato in un piccolo vaso di papiri nel garage e le ragazze (senza il mio permesso) lo hanno riportato nel suo vecchio vaso. Adesso è sparito davvero!!!

What can I say! The first thing I do is to walk on Bang Tao Laguna beach and then wait for the sunset. Here in the picture is the Lotus Restaurant, one of our favorites. What a sightseeing!

Che devo dire. Nella mia banalità la prima cosa che faccio tornato a Phuket è montare sullo scooter e andare alla spiaggia di Bang Tao Laguna ad aspettare il tramonto. Questo nella foto è il Lotus Restaurant, uno dei nostri preferiti. Si mangia bene e che panorama!

Wow we like to flight Etihad. Start at Milan Malpensa, then Abu Dhabi, finally Bangkok. From here to Phuket with Bangkok Airways (as usual we had to pay for extra weight - only for the domestic part of the itinerary). Our friend Patty (formerly known as Fon, Thita, Pat, Patitha…) is here to collect us. No rain no pain. Night with stars and wind. We love the monsoon.

Come ci piace volare con Etihad! Partenza da Malpensa, sosta ad Abu Dhabi poi Bangkok. Da qui si continua con Bangkok Airways (pagando come al solito l’eccesso bagaglio solo per la tratta locale, fortunatamente). La nostra amica Patty (conosciuta come Fon, Thita, Pat, Patitha…) è qui a prenderci. Non piove e la notte è stellata. Amiamo il monsone.
